Steven DeVonne Jordan’s story is one of perseverance, transformation, and divine timing. When he first arrived at the EDGE Program at the Alvis Reentry Center, Steven was catching the bus just to get there. He was determined to make a change, and though the road was uncertain, he stayed committed to his path.
Over the course of the program, Steven obtained his driver’s license and began laying the foundation for a fresh start. And just when he thought the journey had already blessed him beyond measure, he was selected as the winner of the EDGE car giveaway—a 2017 Chevy Cruze—courtesy of the generous partnership with the 614 Summer Series and the 22nd Foundation. “It felt like destiny,” Steven said, reflecting on the moment. “I was the last person to put my name in, and when they called my number, I couldn’t believe it.”
For Steven, the car is more than just a vehicle—it’s a symbol of opportunity. Having reliable transportation removes one of the final barriers to employment and self-sufficiency. “Now I have no excuses,” he shared. “I can get to work, invest in tools and clothes for my trade, and take the next step toward building my future.”
Steven’s journey to EDGE began when his parole officer recommended the program after he relocated to Columbus. Already familiar with positive mentorship programs like Father Up, Steven was introduced to EDGE through Ms. Turner, who saw his desire to grow and supported his entry into the program. Ironically, Steven was the final participant chosen for the cohort, making his car giveaway win all the more poignant.
Throughout his time at EDGE, Steven found more than professional development—he found a supportive community. He credits staff members like Mr. Roddy and others at Alvis for helping him stay the course. Whether he needed help with a resume or a word of encouragement, he always found someone willing to help. “The people here genuinely care,” he said. “They want to see you win.”
With his new car, Steven has set his sights on even greater goals. He plans to begin HVAC school this fall while working full-time. Having his own transportation means he can confidently balance both commitments. “No more buses or Ubers,” he said with a smile. “I know I can get where I need to go—on time and on my own.” To others considering the EDGE program, Steven offers sincere advice: “Make the best decision for your life. If you apply yourself, EDGE will help you succeed. Some folks fell off, but I stayed on track. This program is worth it.”
Steven is also deeply grateful to the 614 Summer Series and the 22nd Foundation. “Without their support, I wouldn’t be where I am. This opportunity has changed my life,” he said. But he’s not just content to receive—he’s committed to giving back. He hopes to return to EDGE in the future to share his success story and inspire others walking similar paths.
Looking ahead, Steven envisions a life filled with purpose, productivity, and continued progress. “A year from now, I’ll be working full-time, in school, and hopefully back at EDGE—this time, as a success story speaker.”
Steven Jordan’s journey from the bus stop to the driver’s seat is more than a personal victory—it’s a powerful testament to what’s possible when opportunity meets determination.
