Stories of Resilience

1

“The light would guide me to fulfill my dreams and interests

The color purple reflected the day I found hope at Amethyst

Since then my life has new meaning,

It’s full of color, like a 5-year-old dreaming

I’m ecstatic about the future and thrilled by the journey

I’ve learned to be patient, focused and that all mankind is worthy

Worthy of love, worthy of a second chance

Should you be so fortunate to have one, go out in the rain and dance”

By Kendal S.

Community leaders and volunteers attended a “Lunch and Learn” focused on Amethyst, an Alvis recovery program for women. Kendal, an Amethyst client, opened the program with a moving poem symbolizing her journey from despair to hope. Part of this poem is printed above.

The purpose of the quarterly luncheon is to provide a forum for women in recovery to educate the public about substance abuse illness and how the evidenced-based program implemented at Amethyst has changed their lives. Two women, Ashley S. and Natalie S., bravely told their painful life stories and welcomed reunification with family and children.

Alvis CEO Denise M. Robinson and Amethyst Clinical Director Jummy Olawale highlighted the vital, life-saving work carried out by Amethyst, an Alvis recovery program. The exciting growth and development, along with a unique campus for Amethyst ladies was described by VP of Advancement, Tracy Kirby.

The newly relocated campus and program expansion, Kirby said, will significantly reduce operating costs for Amethyst as well as the Family and Children’s program.

Amethyst, under the guidance of Alvis, proudly continues to improve the quality of lives for mothers and families in Columbus. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support from our donors and community.
