Clients at Amethyst, an Alvis Recovery Program, made flyers and then hung them up around areas of Columbus on September 6th, as part of “Recovery Awareness Month”. Messages on these small posters were intended to encourage others to seek help and recognize that recovery was truly possible. Friday morning was one of purpose, hopefulness and camaraderie for the 12 women who participated in this Community Outreach Service Project. Their efforts are best summed up in the words they wrote later that day.
“The outing to hang up signs about recovery felt very effective, liberating and directional in a most positive way. As a group of recovering women, we came together in a constructive and influential manner. Much like charity work is about giving back, this too was contributing to the world around us, our very own community and peers,” said Kendal S. “Change and recovery is possible. Just look at us go!”
Many of the Amethyst clients remarked that it was an amazing, remarkable, feel-good experience to get out in the neighborhood they once lived in to spread the love for recovery and be on sober side showing those who struggle that they can recover. Everyone felt excited and blessed to be part of helping their community, potentially saving lives, and doing something bigger than themselves.
Despite feeling a little bit anxious at first, once Kimberly was back in the area where she had used, it made her feel empowered and strong being there to help others.
“The project made me realize how far I’ve come myself,” said Kali, and gave me a sense of accomplishment.”
Recovery is possible! These women show that Amethyst has the potential to help others grow into sober, productive participants in our community. Recovery need not be a dream.
