The Alvis Workforce Development Center recently welcomed more than 100 participants for Lighting the FIRE in Fatherhood, a one-day fatherhood engagement event designed to strengthen families while reinforcing the critical connection between responsible fatherhood and long-term workforce success.

Hosted at the Alvis Workforce Development Center and facilitated by the Workforce Development team, the event was made possible through funding from the Ohio Department of Children and Youth’s June Responsible Fatherhood Month Grant. The event brought together approximately 115 participants, including 75 fathers, 23 children, and 17 spouses, girlfriends, significant others, and additional family supporters, creating an environment where families could learn, grow, and connect together.

At Alvis, workforce development is about much more than helping individuals secure employment. It is about preparing people for long-term success by addressing the personal, family, and social factors that contribute to sustainable careers. Strong fathers often build stronger families, and stronger families create stronger employees and healthier communities. That philosophy served as the foundation for the day’s programming.

A highlight of the event was an inspiring keynote presentation by Dana Brock, who brought a unique and authentic perspective specifically geared toward the population served by Alvis. Rather than portraying himself as a perfect father, Brock openly shared his own parenting journey, acknowledging both his successes and failures while offering practical strategies for becoming a more engaged and intentional parent. His willingness to be transparent created an atmosphere of trust and authenticity that immediately resonated with participants. Fathers remained attentive throughout his presentation, and the audience was highly engaged and responsive to his message of accountability, perseverance, and hope.

Throughout the day, participants attended responsible fatherhood workshops focused on active father involvement, healthy communication, emotional intelligence, effective co-parenting, conflict resolution, and breaking unhealthy generational cycles. Fathers and their children also participated in interactive games and family engagement activities designed to strengthen relationships, encourage teamwork, and create lasting memories.
Because the event was hosted through the Alvis Workforce Development Center, every aspect of the day intentionally connected participants back to opportunities for employment and economic self-sufficiency. Workforce Development staff introduced fathers to the wide range of career and training opportunities available through Alvis, including employment services, job readiness programming, digital skills training, CDL career pathways, ServSafe certification, financial literacy education, and additional workforce initiatives designed to help participants achieve long-term career success.

Community organization resources were made available to participants, offering information on behavioral health services, legal assistance, child support resources, recovery support, and additional family services, reinforcing Alvis’ commitment to addressing the barriers that often stand between individuals and lasting employment.
One of the most meaningful aspects of the event was watching fathers interact intentionally with their children and families in a positive, supportive environment. Families shared meals together, participated in recreational activities, connected with Workforce Development staff and community partners, and left with both practical resources and renewed confidence in their ability to succeed at home and in the workplace.

Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Many fathers expressed appreciation for an event that not only celebrated fatherhood but also recognized the realities they face while rebuilding their lives. Several attendees expressed interest in enrolling in Alvis Workforce Development programs and continuing their engagement with employment, education, and supportive services offered through the organization.
The success of Lighting the FIRE in Fatherhood demonstrates the holistic approach that defines the Alvis Workforce Development Center. By integrating workforce development with family strengthening, Alvis continues to help individuals build the skills, stability, and support systems necessary for lasting success. The event served as a powerful reminder that preparing someone for employment also means investing in the relationships and responsibilities that sustain success long after they enter the workforce.

Through innovative programming, dedicated staff, and strong community partnerships, the Alvis Workforce Development Center remains committed to creating second chances that strengthen fathers, empower families, and build a more resilient workforce throughout Central Ohio.
